In this guide, I’ll take you on a tour of some of the most iconic spots in the city, from the bright lights of Times Square to the breathtaking views at the top of the Empire State Building. Along the way, I’ll share some tips to help you make the most of your time in the Big Apple. So grab your camera and your walking shoes, and let’s get started!
Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this vibrant, bustling city. From the historic landmarks to the trendy neighborhoods, there’s something for everyone in New York City.
One: Exploring the Bright Lights of Times Square
If you’re looking for the quintessential New York experience, Times Square is the place to be. Known as “The Crossroads of the World,” this bustling intersection is a feast for the senses. From the bright lights to the larger-than-life billboards, it’s no wonder that during a typical year over 360,000 people pass through Times Square every day. I prefer to get accommodations near Times Square because of the easy access to multiple subway lines, as well as how easy it is to walk multiple places from there.
So what should you do in Times Square? First, take a moment to soak it all in. The sheer energy and excitement of the place is infectious. Pose for a photo with the famous “Naked Cowboy” or “Desnudas” (painted topless women), who are always eager to take a picture with tourists.
Next, head to the TKTS booth to score discounted tickets to Broadway shows. This is a great way to catch a world-class performance without breaking the bank. Pro tip: Go early in the day to avoid the long lines later on.
But Times Square isn’t just about the bright lights and theater tickets. It’s also home to some fantastic restaurants, from chain favorites like Hard Rock Cafe to local hotspots like Carmine’s Italian Restaurant and Junior’s Cheesecake. But be warned: Times Square can get crowded, especially during peak tourist season. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, try visiting early in the morning or late at night. We happened to wander through extremely late one night when they were filming part of a John Wick movie! That was pretty cool. Also, remember to keep your belongings close, as pickpocketing can be a problem in the area.
All in all, Times Square is a must-visit spot for any first-time visitor to New York City. It’s the epitome of the city’s hustle and bustle, and there’s no place quite like it anywhere else in the world. So grab a slice of pizza, take a selfie with a street performer, and enjoy the bright lights of this iconic spot.
Two: Soaring to New Heights at the Empire State Building
No trip to New York City is complete without a visit to the iconic Empire State Building. This Art Deco masterpiece has been featured in countless films and TV shows, and it’s easy to see why. From the stunning views to the impressive architecture, the Empire State Building is a true marvel.
First things first: get your tickets in advance. This will save you a lot of time and
hassle, as the lines can get quite long. We used this City Pass to see multiple attractions while we were in NYC. It saved us a lot of money as first-timer’s wanting to take in all of the iconic spots. I highly recommend it!
Once you’re inside, take the elevator up to the observatory for breathtaking views of the city skyline. On a clear day, you can see for miles. Be sure to take plenty of photos to capture the moment.
Three: Exploring the Urban Oasis of Central Park
Amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City, Central Park stands as a tranquil oasis. This over 800 acre park is a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a wide range of activities and sights to explore.
First things first: take a deep breath of fresh air and soak in the beauty of your surroundings. Central Park is home to a stunning array of trees, gardens, and lakes, making it the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or picnic. For a more active experience, rent a bike or join a walking tour to explore the park’s many landmarks. You can visit the Bethesda Fountain, the Central Park Zoo, or even catch a performance at the famous Delacorte Theater.
If you’re a fan of art, make sure to visit the iconic Central Park Conservatory Garden, which features three unique gardens, each with its own style and aesthetic. And for a truly Instagram-worthy experience, head to the Bow Bridge, which has been featured in many films and TV shows.
Central Park also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Take a rowboat out on the lake, play a game of frisbee on the Great Lawn, or visit the Wollman Rink for some ice skating in the winter. Pro tip: If you’re looking for a more peaceful experience, head to the
north end of the park, which tends to be less crowded.
Four: Taking in the Views from Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock
No trip to New York City is complete without a visit to Rockefeller Center, a sprawling complex of art, entertainment, and dining. But the real gem of this iconic destination is the Top of the Rock observation deck, which offers some of the most stunning views of the city’s skyline.
The Top of the Rock is situated on the 70th floor of the Rockefeller Center, and it provides 360-degree views of the city, from the Hudson River to the Empire State Building. The observation deck is open from 8am until midnight, so you can take in the city’s glittering skyline during the day or night. But before you make your way to the Top of the Rock, take some time to explore the rest of the Rockefeller Center.
This iconic destination is home to some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the NBC Studios, Radio City Music Hall, and the famous ice rink, which is open for skating in the winter months. For any late night television watchers, it is also home to Jimmy Fallon! You can try to score FREE tickets to his performance here. I highly recommend catching a show if you can grab tickets. It was so much fun!
And if you’re visiting during the holiday season, make sure to check out the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, a towering 75-foot-tall tree that’s illuminated by more than 50,000 LED lights.
When you’re ready to head to the Top of the Rock, make sure to book your tickets in advance, as this popular attraction can get crowded. Once you’re up there, take your time to soak in the views and snap some photos. We went at night and had an amazing view of the Empire State Building.
Five: Paying Tribute at the World Trade Center Memorial, Museum, and One World Trade Center
While New York City is known for its entertainment and shopping, it’s also a city of great resilience and strength. Nowhere is this more evident than at the World Trade Center, the site of the tragic 9/11 attacks in 2001.
Today, the World Trade Center site is a place of reflection, remembrance, and hope. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone coming to New York City. The memorial features two reflecting pools, each one marking the location of one of the twin towers. The pools are surrounded by the names of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks.
The museum is situated underneath the pools and features artifacts, photos, and stories that pay tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11. It’s a powerful and emotional experience that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors.
And if you’re looking for incredible views of the city, make sure to check out One World Trade Center, the second tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The observation deck, known as the One World Observatory, is situated on the 100th, 101st, and 102nd floors and offers breathtaking views of the city and beyond. But it’s not just the views that make One World Trade Center special. The building itself is a symbol of hope and resilience, a testament to the strength of New York City and its people.
When you visit the World Trade Center site, take some time to reflect and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. And make sure to visit the museum and One World Trade Center for a truly unforgettable experience. The museum experience is also an included feature in the City Pass.
Six: Seeing the Iconic Statue of Liberty
No trip to New York City is complete without a visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty. This colossal statue, gifted to the United States by France in 1886, has become an emblem of freedom and democracy around the world.
There are several ways to see the statue, and each offers a unique experience. One of the most popular ways to get up close and personal with Lady Liberty is to take a ferry from Battery Park to Liberty Island. Once there, you can tour the statue’s pedestal and the museum, which offers a fascinating look at the statue’s history and construction.
If you want to get even closer, consider booking a Crown Access ticket, which allows you to climb up to the statue’s crown for an unparalleled view of the city and the harbor. But be warned, tickets for the Crown Access are limited and sell out quickly, so make sure to book in advance.
Another option for viewing the statue is from a distance. Take a stroll along the Brooklyn Bridge, and you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the statue and the Manhattan skyline. Or head to Battery Park, where you can relax on a bench and take in the view while enjoying a hot dog from one of the nearby street vendors.
We took a circle line cruise included in our City Pass for a beautiful view of lady liberty as well as the New York Skyline. It allowed us more time to squeeze in other attractions, and it was included in our pass price.
For a truly unique perspective, consider taking a helicopter tour of the city. Many tour companies offer aerial views of the Statue of Liberty, which is sure to be a highlight of your trip. No matter how you choose to see the Statue of Liberty, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience. So make sure to add this iconic landmark to your New York City itinerary.
Seven: Broadway, Baby!
No trip to New York City is complete without taking in a Broadway show. This iconic avenue is home to some of the most popular and successful theatrical productions in the world. From classic plays to modern musicals, Broadway offers something for everyone. And with so many shows to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which one to see.
But if you’re a first-timer, there’s one show that (in my opinion) you absolutely can’t miss: The Lion King. This award-winning musical has been running on Broadway since 1997 and is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The Lion King is based on the beloved Disney animated movie of the same name and features stunning costumes, breathtaking choreography, and catchy songs that will have you singing along in no time. From the opening number to the emotional finale, The Lion King is a true masterpiece that will leave you in awe. If you’re an 80’s/90’s baby it will be especially enjoyable for you!
But even if The Lion King isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other shows to choose from. From classic musicals like Chicago and Wicked to modern hits like Hamilton, Broadway has something for everyone. Pro tip: If you’re looking to save some money, consider purchasing tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square. You can often find discounted tickets for same-day shows, so it’s worth checking out if you’re flexible with your plans.
Eight: Savoring the Flavor of the Big Apple
One of the best parts of traveling to a new city is trying out the local cuisine, and New York City is no exception. From iconic street food to world-renowned restaurants, this city has something to offer for every palate.
First up on our foodie tour of NYC is Junior’s Cheesecake. This Brooklyn institution has been serving up mouthwatering cheesecake for over 70 years, and it’s a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Next on the list is Serendipity 3, a charming and quirky restaurant famous for its frozen hot chocolate. This decadent treat is a must-try for chocolate lovers, and the whimsical decor of the restaurant is just an added bonus.
For a taste of the local food scene, head over to Chelsea Market. This indoor food hall is a foodie’s paradise, with over 35 vendors serving up everything from artisanal cheeses to fresh seafood. It’s the perfect place to sample a variety of different flavors and cuisines.
If you’re looking for a trendy and upscale dining experience, check out Buddakan in Chelsea. This Asian fusion restaurant has a stunning interior design and a menu that is as visually stunning as it is delicious.
If you’re looking for an authentic, delicious Italian meal, then make sure to hit up Little Italy! There are so many amazing options to choose from. I can’t pick just one.
And of course, no trip to New York City would be complete without indulging in some pizza and hot dogs. There are endless options for both, and I’m pretty sure this photo was of the most amazing hotdog I’ve ever had in my life. Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to venture outside of the tourist areas to find the best food spots. Some of the city’s hidden gems are located in the more residential neighborhoods.
So whether you have a sweet tooth or a savory one, New York City has something to satisfy your cravings. Make sure to come hungry and leave with a full stomach.
Nine: Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges
No trip to New York City would be complete without crossing at least one of the iconic bridges that connect Manhattan to the outer boroughs. The Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge are two of the most well-known and beloved landmarks in the city, offering stunning views of the skyline and the waterways below.
The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was the first bridge to connect Manhattan to Brooklyn, and it remains one of the most recognizable structures in the city. A walk across the bridge is a must-do for any visitor to New York, and you’ll be in good company with the many tourists, joggers, and locals who make the journey every day. Be sure to take in the breathtaking views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline along the way, and stop for a photo op or two.
For a slightly less crowded option, head over to the Manhattan Bridge. Completed in 1909, this bridge connects Chinatown to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) in Brooklyn, and it offers equally stunning views of the city. The walkway is narrower than that of the Brooklyn Bridge, which means fewer crowds and a more intimate experience.
Ten: Exploring Grand Central Station
This iconic transportation hub has been a fixture in the city since 1913, and it remains one of the most beautiful and beloved landmarks in the city. As soon as you step into the main concourse of Grand Central, you’ll be struck by the grandeur and elegance of the space. The soaring ceiling, the massive clock, and the famous information booth all contribute to the station’s unique
charm.
But Grand Central is more than just a pretty space – it’s also a hub of activity and culture. You can grab a quick bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and cafes or browse the shops for souvenirs and gifts. Grand Central is where I had my first taste of a Shake Shack Burger and it sparked an ever lasting love.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a guided tour of the station to learn more about its history and architecture. And of course, no visit to Grand Central would be complete without taking a peek at the famous Whispering Gallery. This hidden gem is located in front of the Oyster Bar & Restaurant, and it allows you to whisper a message into one corner of the archway and have it carried to the opposite corner, thanks to the unique acoustics of the space.
