Costa Rica, a land of lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and stunning wildlife, has no shortage of wonders to offer travelers. Among its many treasures, a visit to La Fortuna Waterfall is an absolute must. Emerging from the Fortuna River, this majestic waterfall plunges an astounding 246 feet (76 meters) into a jade-colored pool below!
More than 100,000 visitors flock to this pristine jungle waterfall each year. A short hike through the lush rainforest leads you straight to the breathtaking falls, where you can immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature. Pack your swimsuit and take a leisurely swim in the inviting pools at the base of the falls.
Managed by the Integral Development Association of La Fortuna, a non-profit organization, all proceeds from visiting the waterfall go towards the protection and management of this precious area, including community education about the environment.
Nestled within the Ecological Reserve Fortuna Waterfall near Arenal Volcano National Park, the waterfall is located in the Alajuela Province. The entrance is just 5.5 km from the town of La Fortuna, where most visitors stay during their visit. You can drive and park on site (what we did) or you can arrange a tour.
For those arriving in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital city, La Fortuna Waterfall is an easy add-on to either end of your trip. It’s a popular day trip destination from San Jose, especially if you’re short on time.
To reach the waterfall, you’ll embark on the La Fortuna Waterfall Hike, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes on the way down and 20 to 30 minutes back up (sometimes longer). The trail is around 0.75 miles (1.2 kilometers) each way and includes a little over 500 stairs, making it a moderate hike that may be challenging for those with knee issues or those unaccustomed to hiking. I hiked with a 30 lb toddler on my back and had to take a few breaks to catch my breath.
Upon arrival, you’ll purchase your ticket and receive a wristband at the visitor center before beginning your journey. You will walk across a small bridge behind the entrance to begin your hike.
The trail features a large platform about 200 meters from the entrance, offering an incredible view of the waterfall and the surrounding jungle landscape from above.
As you descend the staircase towards the base of the falls, you’ll experience a variety of surfaces, from paved paths to wood, steel, concrete, and eventually rocks. Handrails and benches are available for short breaks along the way. Towards the end of the hike, the stairs may become wet, and you’ll feel the cool mist from the falls.
At the bottom, an observation deck welcomes you, offering another stunning view of the waterfall. A second trail leads downstream to a series of natural pools, perfect for a refreshing swim. There is a lifeguard near the base of the falls that ensures no one is swimming too close.
After you make the trek back up the “stair climber of Costa Rica,” you can grab a drink or food at the restaurant. We had amazing smoothies there.
A visit to La Fortuna Waterfall promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. So, gear up for an awe-inspiring journey, and let La Fortuna Waterfall captivate your heart and soul!
