Love At First Flight

Overnight Stay in the Dreamy Schäfler Mountain Hut

So you are thinking of an overnight stay in the dreamy Schäfler Mountain Hut? If you are reading this article, I am going to assume that you’ve witnessed the dramatic peaks of the Schäfler Ridgeline that is famous throughout Instagram. The Berggasthaus Schafler is a quaint mountain hut escape that is your ticket to witnessing sunrise or sunset upon this gorgeous ridge. I’ll tell you all that you need to know!

Schäfler Hut: The Inside Scoop

This historic mountain haven was built in 1920, and is a piece of hiking history. It’s one of the oldest mountain huts in the Alpstein range, welcoming weary hikers and mountaineers for over a century. The staff hikes up and works days at a time before hiking back down.

In a bid to keep Mother Nature happy, the Schäfler Hut runs on solar power for its electricity needs. There is no electricity in your room, but there is a central power strip in the hall for people to charge their mobile devices. We brought a portable battery pack.

Accommodations

You can book a private double room. This is the option that we chose, or you can choose to stay in a bunk room. If you stay in a bunk room, sleeping bags are required. You can either bring your own or rent one for 5 CHF.

Check In and Meals

Check in time is 1700 and you must check out by 0800. Breakfast is included in your stay and is from 0715-0900. A nice assortment of cheese and yogurt was available to us, as well as coffee.

Coffee tastes better with a good view

Dinner is not included in your stay, but it is served until 1730. I wasn’t very hungry and only had the vegetable soup. Shane had the pasta with pork and apple puree, which was basically just mac n cheese with some bacon bits on top. It was ok, but for the price it wasn’t very impressive. I have heard several people rave about the rosti. If you are staying at the hut, you just need to settle your bill that evening before you retire for the night.

Facilities

There are no showers available at the hut. There is a washroom that provides warm and cold running water. There were also a couple of wash basins in our room that were filled with water. Again, there is no electricity in your room. You will need to either bring a battery pack, or use the communal power strip located in the hallway to charge your device.

The only footwear welcome in the sleeping quarters are slippers. There is a central room for depositing your hiking boots. You can bring your own, or there are plenty of communal slippers to choose from.

Cash is accepted as well as credit cards for payment. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. This was our first Mountain Hut experience and it was completely worth it.

I hope this article has helped you plan an epic Alpstein region adventure. This was my favorite part of Switzerland and I hope you enjoy it as thoroughly as I did! For more information about hiking the Schäfler Ridge trail, check out my blog post here.
