Finnish Lapland may be on your bucket list; this 6 day Finland winter itinerary packs a lot into one trip.
Additionally, we spent one night at the airport in Helsinki.
Three nights at Aurora Village in Ivalo followed, with meals, transfers, clothing, and Arctic activities arranged.
This was a girls trip with three of my coworkers, and we wanted the adventurous side of Lapland more than a Santa-focused vacation. Ivalo gave us exactly that. We mushed our own dog-sled teams, drove snowmobiles through the snow, rode behind reindeer, went ice karting and climbed into an actual hole cut through a frozen river for a cold plunge. It was one of those trips that somehow felt easy to plan once we arrived, but still completely unlike anywhere else I had ever been.
The only thing that did not cooperate was the Northern Lights. It stayed cloudy while we were there. Aurora Village saw them the day before we arrived and again the day after we left, which feels almost comical now. It is also an important reminder: no hotel, glass ceiling or tour can guarantee the aurora. Finland was still worth the flight even without it.

Day 1 Fly Overnight to Helsinki
For travelers coming from the United States, the first day is mostly a travel day. We flew overnight to Helsinki and treated our arrival day as a gentle introduction to Finland instead of immediately trying to connect to Lapland. That one-night buffer made the trip feel much less rushed and gave us a chance to see a little of Helsinki before an early flight north.
Pack one change of clothes and anything you need for the Helsinki night somewhere easy to reach. You do not need to unpack all of your Arctic gear yet, especially because Aurora Village provides substantial winter clothing for its guests.
Day 2 Helsinki and Cafe Regatta
After arriving in Helsinki, we headed to Cafe Regatta, the tiny red cottage by the water.
Moreover, we warmed up with something hot and discussed our 6 day Finland winter itinerary.
Walking on the frozen Gulf of Finland, coming from Tennessee, felt wild yet exciting.
We stayed at Clarion Hotel Helsinki Airport, which was ideal because our Finnair flight to Ivalo left around 6 a.m. We ate dinner at the hotel. There is a lovely rooftop restaurant and it was delicious. Then we went to bed early. One of the best surprises was that the hotel’s breakfast buffet opened around 3 a.m. It had a huge assortment of food, so we could eat a real breakfast before heading to our gate instead of starting a long travel day with airport snacks.
For this particular itinerary, one night in Helsinki was enough. I would not pretend that we fully explored the city, but it worked perfectly as a stopover and gave us an experience outside Lapland without taking time away from Ivalo. The airport was also one of my very favorites!
Day 3 Fly to Ivalo and Try a River Cold Plunge
We took the early Finnair flight from Helsinki to Ivalo.
For a 6 day Finland winter itinerary, our Aurora Village Adventure Package included transportation from Ivalo Airport.
We never needed a rental car.
That became one of my favorite parts because the logistics were handled once we landed.
We arrived before our room was ready, but Aurora Village made the wait feel like part of the trip. We started with the wood-fired sauna beside the river and a cold plunge that I will never forget. The staff used a hatchet and pickaxe to cut a hole through the frozen river. Then we went from the heat of the wood sauna directly into water beneath the ice while the air hovered around -20 C.
It sounds absolutely ridiculous when I type that, but it was incredible. The wood-fired sauna sat right along the river, making the hot-to-cold transition feel much wilder than walking from a hotel sauna to a normal plunge pool.
Afterward, we warmed up, played games in the dining hall and waited for check-in. We also fed the reindeer that day, which took about 30 minutes and gave us time to see them up close before our longer reindeer experience the next morning.
Staying in an Aurora Suite Tower
We stayed in one of Aurora Village’s newer Aurora Suite Towers, and I would choose it again without hesitation. The suite had one bed upstairs and another downstairs, with each bed positioned beneath a glass ceiling. There was also a pullout sofa that could sleep two additional guests, plus a kitchen area and bathroom.
For four adults, we had plenty of space. The glass ceilings gave us the experience everyone wants from a Lapland stay, but the two-level layout made the suite far more practical for a girls trip than squeezing everyone into one small glass cabin.
Of course, a glass ceiling is not a Northern Lights guarantee. We watched the clouds instead, but I still loved waking up beneath that snowy Arctic sky.

Day 4 Reindeer and Huskies
Reindeer Sleigh Ride and Sámi Culture
The next morning began with a reindeer sleigh ride. The ride itself lasted about an hour, followed by an introduction to Sámi culture and reindeer traditions. It was slow, peaceful and completely different from the faster activities later in the trip.
The cultural portion mattered to me because the experience was more than sitting in a sleigh for a photo. We learned about the people and traditions connected to reindeer herding, which gave the activity more context.
Two Hour Husky Safari
After lunch, we did the two-hour husky safari, and this was easily my favorite experience in Finland. Each of us paired up with one other person. We learned how to drive the sled and mush our own team, then switched drivers around the halfway point so everyone had a turn.
I expected dog sledding to be fun. I did not expect the actual driving to be the part I loved most. Standing behind the sled with the dogs pulling us through the snow felt like a real adventure instead of a ride designed only for tourists. If you are comparing Lapland packages, check whether you get to drive your own team because it completely changed the experience for us.
Panorama Sauna and Hot Tub
That evening, we reserved the Panorama Sauna and used the outdoor hot tub. This was separate from our Adventure Package. Unlike the wood-fired sauna beside the river, this sauna sat away from the river and paired with a hot tub rather than the plunge through the ice. It was a much more relaxed way to end the day, especially after the husky safari.
Day 5 Snowmobiles Ice Karting and an Aurora Tour
Beginner Friendly Snowmobile Safari
After breakfast, we headed out for a two-hour snowmobile safari. It was beginner-friendly, even if you had never driven a snowmobile before. The provided winter suits made a huge difference at -20 C, especially once we started moving and the wind hit.
Ice Karting
After lunch, we went ice karting, which is exactly what it sounds like: go-karts on ice. It was chaotic, competitive and such a fun addition to the more traditional Lapland activities. This was one of those experiences I did not travel to Finland specifically to do, but it ended up being one of our favorite memories as a group.
Northern Lights Chasing Tour
Following our multi-course dinner, we joined an evening aurora-chasing tour. Unfortunately, the clouds never cleared enough for us to see the Northern Lights in Finland. They had appeared the day before we arrived and returned the day after we left.
Would I still book the tour? Yes. Getting away from lights and following local conditions gives you a better opportunity than staying in your room, but the aurora is a natural phenomenon. Clear skies and solar activity both matter, and sometimes your dates simply do not line up. Build a Lapland itinerary you will love even if the sky stays dark. Everything else we experienced made this trip worth it.
Day 6 Depart Ivalo
On our final morning, we transferred back to Ivalo Airport. We continued to Iceland, but you could connect through Helsinki and begin the trip home instead.
If I could change one part of our itinerary, I would stay one more night in Ivalo. Aurora Village also offered ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but we could not fit them into our three-night stay. A fourth night would create room for another activity and give you one more chance at clear skies for the Northern Lights.

The river cold plunge, wood-fired sauna and Panorama Sauna with hot tub were not included in our Adventure Package and were booked separately.
What to Wear in Ivalo in Winter
Temperatures reached approximately -20 C during our trip. Most days, we wore merino wool base layers beneath the insulated suits provided by Aurora Village. Because boots, wool socks, mittens, balaclavas and snowsuits were supplied, we did not have to pack a suitcase full of bulky outerwear.

- Moisturizer and lip balm for the dry Arctic air
What Winter Daylight Is Really Like in Ivalo
I worried that the limited winter daylight might make the days feel dark, but I actually loved it. Around our early-February trip, the sun came up at roughly 10 a.m. and set around 4 p.m. The light lingered in shades of pink and gold, almost as if sunrise blended into a very long golden hour before sunset.
There was enough daylight for our daytime excursions, and the extended soft light made the snow-covered landscape even prettier. Exact sunrise and sunset times change quickly throughout the winter, so check them for your dates rather than planning around ours.
Is Six Days in Finland Enough
Six days was enough to combine a Helsinki stopover with three activity-filled nights in Ivalo, especially because Aurora Village organized almost everything. It is a great itinerary for travelers with limited vacation time who want a true winter adventure without driving between multiple Lapland destinations.
That said, my ideal version would add a fourth night in Ivalo. You would gain another chance to see the Northern Lights and have time for ice fishing, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing without giving up the huskies, reindeer or snowmobiles.

Do you need a rental car in Ivalo
We did not. Aurora Village included our airport transfers, meals and organized activities, so everything we needed was on site or arranged for us.
Can you see the Northern Lights from an Aurora Suite Tower
You may be able to see them through the glass ceiling when the sky is clear and aurora activity is present, but there is never a guarantee. It was cloudy for our entire stay, and we did not see the lights in Finland. We were fortunate enough to see them during our stopover in Iceland.
Is dog sledding in Ivalo worth it
Yes. It was my favorite activity of the trip. We were placed in teams of two, learned to mush our own dogs and switched drivers halfway through the two-hour safari.
Is Ivalo suitable for a girls trip or couples trip
Both. Our trip was a girls trip, but the glass-roof accommodations, saunas and Arctic activities would also be ideal for couples. Families can enjoy Ivalo too, although families primarily interested in meeting Santa may prefer Rovaniemi.
How cold is Ivalo in winter
It was approximately -20 C during our trip. Aurora Village provided heavy winter clothing, and we wore merino wool layers underneath it. Conditions vary, so check the forecast and the provider clothing list before traveling.
Final Thoughts on Our Finland Winter Trip
I went to Finnish Lapland hoping to see the Northern Lights, and Finland reminded me that the best trips are rarely only about the thing you went there to find. We missed the aurora, but I got to mush my own husky team through the snow, plunge into a river beneath the ice and watch the Arctic sky stay pink for what felt like hours.
For an adventure-focused Finland winter itinerary, I would choose Ivalo and Aurora Village again. I would simply add one more night.
