Rovaniemi vs Ivalo can both offer the snowy Finnish Lapland trip you imagine.
However, they are not interchangeable.
Rovaniemi is the easier choice for Santa Claus Village, restaurants, and family-friendly Christmas magic.
Ivalo is farther north, quieter, and better for a remote Arctic resort and outdoor activities.
For our girls trip, we chose Ivalo. We wanted huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, saunas, and the best setting we could find for chasing the Northern Lights. We were less interested in Santa attractions or having a long list of restaurants and shops nearby. Aurora Village Ivalo offered the exact experience we wanted in one package.
One important note before comparing them: I did not visit Rovaniemi on this trip. This is not a claim that Ivalo is universally better or a firsthand review of both destinations. It is an explanation of how I compared the two while planning, why I picked Ivalo and whether I was happy with that choice afterward.

Why We Chose Ivalo Instead of Rovaniemi
Ivalo Felt Quieter and Less Commercial
The biggest reason we chose Ivalo was simple: we wanted a quieter and less commercial version of Finnish Lapland. Rovaniemi is famous for good reason. It is the official hometown of Santa Claus, and Santa Claus Village brings together Santa experiences, the Arctic Circle, shops, restaurants and activities in one accessible destination.
That sounded wonderful for a family trip, but it was not the focus of this trip. Four adults traveling together did not need an itinerary built around Santa. We wanted the snow-covered wilderness and the adventures we associated with Lapland.
Ivalo Is Farther North
Ivalo sits considerably farther north than Rovaniemi, which appealed to us because we wanted a remote Arctic setting and hoped to see the Northern Lights. Location alone cannot promise an aurora. You still need darkness, solar activity and, most frustratingly, clear skies.
We learned that last part firsthand.
It was cloudy throughout our Ivalo stay.
The lights at Aurora Village appeared the day before we arrived.
It appeared again the day after we left, but not while we were there.
I would still choose Ivalo because the landscape and activities made the trip incredible without the lights.
Think of the aurora as a bonus, never the only reason for your vacation.
We were very fortunate to see them during our Iceland stopover on the way home.
Aurora Village Made the Decision Easy
Aurora Village was a major reason we picked Ivalo. We booked its Adventure Package and stayed three nights in one of the new Aurora Suite Towers. Once we arrived, we did not need a rental car or a collection of separate reservations. Airport transfers, meals, winter clothing and almost all of our activities were handled for us.
Our suite was also ideal for a group. One bed was upstairs and one was downstairs, and both sat beneath glass ceilings. A pullout sofa could accommodate two more people, and the suite included a kitchen area and bathroom. Four adults had plenty of room, and I would book the same suite again.
The Adventure Package Fit an Adult Girls Trip
Our days were full without feeling like we were moving through a theme park. We fed reindeer, took a reindeer sleigh ride, learned about Sámi culture, drove snowmobiles, went ice karting and joined a Northern Lights tour.
The two-hour husky safari was the winner for me. We paired up, learned how to mush our own dog team and switched drivers halfway through. It felt active and adventurous, which was exactly what I wanted from this trip.
We also booked two sauna experiences separately from the package. One included a wood-fired sauna beside the river and a cold plunge through a hole the staff cut in the frozen river with a hatchet and pickaxe. The other was the Panorama Sauna with an outdoor hot tub. If your idea of Lapland involves a little bit of suffering followed by a warm sauna and a multi-course dinner, Ivalo understood the assignment.
We Did Not Need Restaurants or a Rental Car
My biggest hesitation about Ivalo was whether we would feel stuck without many nearby restaurant choices. In practice, that never became a problem. Aurora Village included buffet-style breakfast and lunch plus a plated multi-course dinner each evening. Dinner required choosing a reservation time of either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m., and the food was amazing.
Because our transfers, meals and activities were organized through the resort, we did not need to drive in Arctic winter conditions or coordinate transportation. For a short trip, that convenience mattered more to us than having a city full of independent options.
When Rovaniemi Is the Better Choice
Ivalo was right for our trip, but I would not recommend it automatically to everyone. Rovaniemi is likely the better choice when Santa Claus Village is one of the main reasons you are traveling to Finland.
Santa Claus Village is located on the Arctic Circle and is open year-round. Visitors can meet Santa, visit the Main Post Office, cross the Arctic Circle and choose from restaurants, shops, reindeer experiences and husky activities. That concentration of attractions makes Rovaniemi especially appealing for a first family trip.
If I return to Finnish Lapland with my children, I would like to take them to Rovaniemi. I can picture how magical Santa Claus Village would feel at their age, and I would rather embrace that version of Lapland with them than skip it simply because I chose Ivalo for an adult trip.
When Ivalo Is the Better Choice
Choose Ivalo when you care more about quiet, wilderness and resort-based Arctic activities than shopping, nightlife or Santa attractions. It worked especially well for our girls trip because we could settle into one comfortable base and let the experiences come to us.

- You want to stay beneath a glass ceiling away from a larger city
- You are planning a couples trip or adult adventure trip

Is Ivalo Better for the Northern Lights
Ivalo’s northern location and remote surroundings make it an appealing base for aurora travelers, particularly when you can get away from artificial light. However, I would not choose any Lapland destination based on a promise that you will see the Northern Lights.
Our experience proves why. We stayed in a glass-roof suite and went on an aurora-chasing tour, but heavy cloud cover blocked the sky. Meanwhile, guests on the dates immediately before and after ours saw the lights. Stay several nights if possible, book activities you genuinely want to do and treat any aurora sighting as the extra magic on top.
Is Rovaniemi More Convenient Than Ivalo
Rovaniemi generally offers more city infrastructure, restaurants and independently bookable attractions. It also makes visiting Santa Claus Village straightforward. Ivalo can still be remarkably easy when you select an all-inclusive-style resort package.
We flew from Helsinki to Ivalo on Finnair, used the included Aurora Village airport transfer and never rented a car. All three daily meals were included, and the resort scheduled our activities. For us, Ivalo felt less complicated than building a city-based itinerary even though it was more remote.
How Many Nights Should You Spend in Ivalo
We spent three nights at Aurora Village, and we fit in far more than I expected. Still, the one change I would make is staying a fourth night. Aurora Village also offered ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but we did not have time to try them.
Four nights would also give you another opportunity for clear skies. If seeing the Northern Lights is important, every additional night improves your odds more honestly than choosing a hotel that makes guarantees nature cannot keep.

Is Rovaniemi or Ivalo better for families
Rovaniemi is likely better for families whose priority is meeting Santa and experiencing Santa Claus Village. Ivalo can also work for families who prefer outdoor adventures and a quieter resort stay.
Is Rovaniemi or Ivalo better for couples
Ivalo is an excellent fit for couples seeking glass-roof accommodations, remote scenery, saunas and packaged Arctic activities. Couples who want more restaurant choices and attractions may prefer Rovaniemi.
Can you visit both Rovaniemi and Ivalo
Yes, but I would only combine them when you have enough time to justify changing bases. On a short trip, staying in one destination lets you spend more time on activities and gives you several nights in the same place for aurora watching.
Do you need a car in Ivalo
We did not need one. Our Aurora Village package included airport transfers, meals and organized excursions. Travelers staying elsewhere should confirm transportation before assuming they can travel without a car.
Did we regret skipping Rovaniemi
No. Ivalo was the right choice for our adult girls trip. I would still like to visit Rovaniemi on a future trip with my children because Santa Claus Village would be a major part of that experience.
Our Verdict Ivalo Was Right for This Trip
I am glad we chose Ivalo. It gave us the quieter, adventure-filled Lapland trip we wanted, and Aurora Village removed nearly all of the logistical stress. We did not need a car, we loved the food and our Aurora Suite Tower, and our days were filled with experiences that felt completely different from home.
Rovaniemi versus Ivalo is not really about which destination is better. It is about which version of Lapland you are trying to experience. For Santa magic and a family-focused first visit, I would choose Rovaniemi.
