Why Zermatt is a Hiker’s Dream
A Car-Free Alpine Village
Zermatt is unique in that it is entirely car-free, ensuring a peaceful and clean environment. The only vehicles you’ll see are electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages, adding to the village’s charm. To reach Zermatt, you’ll need to park your car in the nearby town of Täsch and take a short train ride to the village. Do not make the same mistake that I did and just type in “Zermatt” in your Google maps. It WILL take you into the town of Zermatt and you will be wondering why you can’t find parking.
Parking in Täsch
Täsch is the gateway to Zermatt, and it’s where you’ll leave your car. The Matterhorn Terminal Täsch offers ample parking facilities. Simply park your car, grab your gear, and head to the train station. Trains to Zermatt run every 20 minutes, so you won’t have to wait long. The ride is about 12 minutes, offering stunning views as you approach Zermatt. We had no problem grabbing a ticket at the kiosk on site.

The Train Journey
The train journey from Täsch to Zermatt is a scenic experience in itself. As the train winds through the mountains, you’ll get your first glimpses of the stunning alpine landscape. The closer you get to Zermatt, the more majestic the views become. The anticipation builds as the Matterhorn comes into view. Once you arrive in Zermatt, there are lockers for your luggage or belongings if you don’t have accommodations in the village. However, if you are staying in the village, your hotel should have a small shuttle waiting on you.
Exploring Zermatt
Once you arrive in Zermatt, take some time to explore the village. Zermatt is known for its charming streets, high-end shops, and cozy cafes. Wander around, soak in the atmosphere, and perhaps grab a coffee before beginning your hike.
The Gondola Ride to Blauherd
Getting to the Gondola Station
From the Zermatt train station, head to the Sunnegga Funicular, which will take you up to the Sunnegga station. The funicular is a quick and easy way to gain some elevation and start your hike on a high note. From Sunnegga, you’ll take a gondola to Blauherd, the starting point of your hike to Fluhalp Hut.
The Gondola Experience
The gondola ride from Sunnegga to Blauherd offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you ascend, the Matterhorn looms larger and more impressive. The ride takes about 10 minutes, and you’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the stunning vistas.
Hiking to Fluhalp Hut (Blauherd to Stellisee)
Trail Overview
The hike from Blauherd to Fluhalp Hut is about 4.5 kilometers (2.6 miles) round trip and takes around 1.5 hours to return to the gondola. The trail is well-marked and moderately challenging, with some steep sections. However, the breathtaking scenery and the promise of a cozy mountain hut at the end make it well worth the effort.
Along the Trail
As you hike, you’ll pass through alpine meadows and will be treated to uninterrupted views of the Matterhorn. The trail offers plenty of opportunities for photography, so be sure to take your time and enjoy the journey. You might even spot some local wildlife, such as marmots and ibex.
Arriving at Fluhalp Hut
As you approach Fluhalp Hut, you’ll be greeted by stunning panoramic views and you will see that Lake Stellisee sits below the hut. The hut is perched at an elevation of 2,606 meters (8,550 feet), offering a perfect vantage point to admire the surrounding peaks and valleys. The welcoming sight of the hut, with its rustic charm and stunning backdrop, is a reward in itself.

Fluhalp Hut offers comfortable accommodations in a traditional Swiss mountain setting. The hut provides dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds, perfect for hikers looking to rest after a day on the trails. The hut is known for its warm and friendly atmosphere, making it a great place to meet fellow adventurers. Check in begins at 2 pm. We chose a double room with a Matterhorn view and it was 100% worth it.

One of the highlights of staying at Fluhalp Hut is the included breakfast and dinner. After checking in, you’ll be treated to a delicious dinner featuring hearty Swiss cuisine. Think fondue, rosti, and other alpine specialties. The staff at the hut was extraordinary. We had the best meal during our entire Switzerland stay here at the hut. The pumpkin soup was amazing. The next morning, a generous breakfast will fuel you for your hike back down to Zermatt.
Stellisee Lake
Stellisee Lake is part of the famous 5 Lakes Walk in Zermatt. You can see the Matterhorn reflection in 3 of the 5 lakes, including Stellisee.
Watching the Sunset Over the Matterhorn
One of the most magical experiences at Fluhalp Hut is watching the sunset over the Matterhorn. In the evening, head to Stellisee Lake, a short walk from the hut. The lake offers a perfect reflection of the Matterhorn, creating a stunning mirror image. As the sun sets, the sky turns shades of pink and orange, casting a warm glow over the iconic peak. It’s a sight you’ll never forget. We stayed out long after the sun had set to savor in the blue hour.
Sunrise at Stellisee and Exploring Zermatt
Early Morning: Sunrise at Stellisee Lake
Set your alarm early and make the short hike back to Stellisee Lake for sunrise. Watching the sun rise over the Matterhorn is an experience that words can hardly describe. The first light of dawn illuminates the peak, turning it into a brilliant gold. The calm waters of Stellisee provide a perfect reflection, making for incredible photos.
Breakfast and Sunrise at Stellisee without Fluhalp Accommodations
During the summer, you can book a ticket for an early morning gondola on Saturdays to watch the sunrise at Stellisee. This ticket also includes breakfast at the Fluhalp hut. It is not a guided tour and it can be booked up until the evening prior. Times vary according to the date of hike.
Hiking Back to Zermatt
After soaking in the sunrise, return to Fluhalp Hut for breakfast. Once you’re fueled up, it’s time to hike back to Blauherd. From there, take the gondola and funicular back down to Zermatt. The descent offers a different perspective on the landscape, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take in the views.

Back in Zermatt, spend some time exploring the village. Zermatt is rich in history and culture, with plenty to see and do.
Gornergrat Railway
If you still have energy for more adventure, take a ride on the Gornergrat Railway. This cogwheel train takes you up to the Gornergrat viewpoint, one of the highest in Europe. From here, you’ll have a panoramic view of the Matterhorn and the surrounding 29 peaks over 4,000 meters. It’s a perfect way to cap off your Zermatt adventure.
Shopping and Dining in Zermatt
Zermatt is known for its high-end shops and gourmet restaurants. Stroll through the charming streets, browse the boutiques, and pick up some Swiss souvenirs.
